The former post office on Coolsingel is getting a spectacular repurposing. This almost 100-year-old national monument will become a luxury Kimpton hotel with lively central halls full of shops, bars and restaurants. The American architectural firm ODA is working with Braaksma & Roos to preserve the historic character while breathing new life into it.
The 155-metre high POSTtoren will rise in the current courtyard of the post office building. This impressive residential tower offers 305 unique flats spread over 43 floors, ranging from 44 to 99 m² - many with outdoor space. The top floors house exclusive penthouses of up to 234 m² with generous terraces.
The tower stands on an 18-metre-high structure, creating an open connection to the Meent, Stadhuisstraat and Rodezand. This opens the building to the city and creates a vibrant, accessible place. The facade acts as a second skin and is executed in high-quality materials that enhance the monumental heritage.
POST Rotterdam connects history with contemporary living and brings an icon back to the heart of the city.
In this project, we ensured that the design was ready for execution, with all components fitting together seamlessly.
Especially in collaboration with the contractor combination, the façade supplier and the installer were given room to make optimisations, and we guided them in this, from the plan elaboration to the various buyers' options - a process that was quite intensive.
Coordination at installation level was also crucial. Spindler plays a key role here as installer, and we worked closely together to ensure that all installations were perfectly integrated into the building structure.
Interestingly, we initially envisaged a traditional plan of action, where the project would be fully developed in a few months Instead of working out everything in detail in advance, the contractor chose to let the project grow organically. An approach that allows for flexibility and customisation.
